A jury has ruled in favor of Johnny Depp, awarding him $15 Million in Damages against his ex-wife, Amber Heard

In Johnny Depp’s favor, the jury has given its verdict in Amber Heard’s defamation lawsuit. The conclusion of the trial came after a lot of deliberation and testimonies from both sides.

The jury awarded the actor $10 million dollars in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in punitive damages on Wednesday, June 1

Depp was not physically present at the hearing. Heard, however, was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages in her counterclaim against her ex-husband.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star first took legal action against his ex-wife two years after their divorce was finalized in 2016.

Heard has authored an opinion piece in December 2018 which focuses on her past history of abuse. In response, Depp had implied that the article affected his career in Hollywood even if it never mentioned him by name.

Depp, during his trial, in spring 2022, argued that he missed out on many movie roles because of her – citing their split and allegations.

Amber Heard made headlines when she accused Depp of domestic violence and obtained a temporary restraining order days after filing for divorce in May 2016.

“It’s been six years of trying times,” Depp said during his witness testimony in April. “It’s pretty strange when one day you’re Cinderella, so to speak, then 0.6 seconds you’re Quasimodo. I didn’t deserve that, nor did my children, nor did the people who have believed in me for all these years. I didn’t want any of those people to believe that I had done them wrong or lied to them or that I was a fraud. I pride myself on honesty.”

Amber Heard released the following statement on her Twitter account: “I’m heartbroken.” Her words followed a not guilty verdict in a defamation case against her ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Amber Heard Statement

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.”

Defending her claims and slamming the reception of it by the public, she continued:

“I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK. I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”
